ENGLISH SCHOOL C.1830
A VILLAGE CRICKET MATCH Oil on panel43cm x 71cm (17in x 28in)Note: By the mid nineteenth century underarm bowling had disappeared in cricket and from the 1820's looser trousers as worn by the players in our painting had become the norm. There is an engraving of the match depicted in Getty images but there are no further details other than the suggestion that the match took place in Kent. Kent County Cricket club were unaware of the engraving but were doubtful that it was a Kent subject. There are three known examples of trees within the boundary in cricket, the most celebrated of which was the 'St Lawrence Lime' at Canterbury Cricket Ground which eventially blew down in 2005.
